… so an old high school friend of mine just Facebook messaged me to ask if I’d be the emcee at a show his band and a few others are playing in my hometown. He writes, “We want a girl to introduce the bands, someone easy on the eyes and that has the ovaries to stand and talk in front of a crowd. We all thought you would be a good choice. Would you be interested?”

On the one hand, it’s really flattering and awesome because I’m a big fan of their music. But I’m seriously wondering if my friend: A. forgot my severe fear of crowds, B. forgot my inability to walk, enunciate, or make sense with large groups of people looking at me, and C. forgot that I no longer live in said hometown (although, okay, I am there now). Also, my crazy ex-boyfriend recently moved back to my hometown and would probably attend said show, making it difficult for me to continue moving toward my goal of never seeing or interacting with him again.

I feel weirdly anxious and taken aback about the whole thing, even though it’s not really a big deal at all (and admittedly part of that may just be how stir crazy I’ve gotten alone in this house filled with cats and terrifyingly huge reading assignments).

(Also, I really hope writing about this doesn’t sound douchey; I promise I just really don’t know what to do. It would be really cool and I’m honored, but the idea is terrifying and I know I will make a massive jackass of myself.)

Ranty rant, in which I channel all other frustrations into fruit:

For the second week in a row, some motherfucker left a damp, squishy, rapidly deteriorating, half-eaten fruit on a table in the library. Last week it was an orange, slices broken open leaking juice and the peel shredded into dozens of tiny pieces, all waiting to lodge themselves under my fingernails as I attempted to clean up. This week, it was a rotting banana, brown and half-liquid.

I know I’m supposed to say, “Oh, I guess it’s my job to clean up after patrons,” but fuck that, I work in a fucking library. The library assistant job description doesn’t say “responsible for cleaning up after every sadistic motherbitch who needs a potassium boost while they browse dissertations on advertising in rural America in 1935,” or at least it didn’t when I took the job.

Clean-up also entails scooping up the soggy fruit entrails in my hands and hauling them out of the library and down two hallways to the nearest trash can because if they’re found in a library trash can, my ass will be toast for allowing patrons to bring in food.
